RoHS & WEEE

The Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) Directive

The primary purpose of the Directive is the prevention of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and requires the re-use, recycling and other forms of recovery of such waste so as to reduce its disposal to landfill or incineration.

The Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) Directive became European law on 27th January 2003 and allows a maximum of eighteen months for transposition to individual member state legislation. Whilst the UK has missed this deadline it is now expected that the regulations will be in place by late summer 2006 with the implementation date being January. Following a WEEE producer stakeholder meeting on 26th January 2006 it is expected that the DTI will come up with a more robust timeline in the next few weeks. Producers must begin financing the collection and treatment of WEEE from the Implementation Date.

The following dates are provided to give guidance on our progress and will be reviewed and updated on a quarterly basis to ensure that conformance is achieved on time.

A PRODUCER is anyone who:

  • Manufactures and sells electrical and electronic equipment under his own brand
  • Resells under his own brand equipment produced by other suppliers
  • Imports or exports electrical and electronic equipment on a professional basis into a Member State

WEEE covers a number of items:

  • Small household appliances
  • Large household appliances
  • IT and telecommunications equipment
  • Consumer equipment
  • Lighting
  • Electrical and electronic tools (except large scale stationary industrial tools)
  • Toys, leisure and sports equipment
  • Medical devices (with the exception of implanted and infected products)
  • Monitoring and control instruments
  • Automatic dispensers

XP Energy Systems Ltd has identified that our single phase UPS = 3 k VA fall within the scope of the WEEE directive (DTI Guidance paragraph 18 & 19). Products placed on the market after 13th August 2005 will be marked with the 'wheelie bin' symbol in accordance with EN50419.

Under Producer Responsibility companies will have the option of delegating their responsibilities to a collective compliance scheme. In order to comply with the WEEE Directive XP Energy systems as part of the XP Power Group has elected to follow this route and is a member of B2B Compliance. This scheme is operated by GAMBICA B2B Compliance Ltd, an initiative of the GAMBICA Association Ltd.

For any enquiries relating to XP Power's obligations under WEEE contact the B2B Compliance helpline on +44 (0)1691 676124 or visit the website at: www.b2compliance.org.uk
